Welcome the 2014 Sundance shorts!

The 2014 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at the Enzian Theater in Maitland, Florida. It will be shown at other cinemas around the country too. It represents the best of the shorts from the Sundance Film Festival during the previous year, not the upcoming festival. For details on the program, see www.Enzian.org or cinema.cornell.edu. The program lasts 94 minutes.

I was able to see just one of the films in advance this year, Verbatim, directed by Brett Weiner, by virtue of its appearance at the 2014 Florida Film Festival. Worthy of 3 stars (on my 0-5 scale), it’s a uniquely funny look at just how ridiculous court testimony can sometimes be.

Epilogue

After seeing tonight’s program, I admit disappointment, as I can recommend just three of the eight. And those three rise only to the level of 3 stars. The majority of the others get 2 stars, with one film dropping all the way to a 1. I thank Sundance for doing the program, but are these really the best shorts of the festival?!

The 3-star films are Afronauts, MeTube: August Sings Carmen “Habanera” and Verbatim. The 1-star is Love. Love. Love. All others get 2 stars.
