Short Film of the Day: ‘Copy Shop’

March 24, 2020

Copy Shop (2001), written and directed by Austrian filmmaker Virgil Widrich, and starring Johannes Silberschneider, is a Kafkaesque masterpiece exploring identity and conformity. And, in a metatheatrical touch, the film itself was shot with a digital camera, then digitally manipulated and then printed on paper — before those pieces of paper were filmed with a 35mm camera. So the movie itself is a copy.

The film garnered worldwide praise and received an Oscar nomination for best live-action short film. And for fans of The Twilight Zone, Copy Shop might remind you of episode 21 (Mirror Image).
