Short Film of the Day: ‘La Cabina’ (‘The Telephone Box’)

April 10, 2020

La Cabina (The Phone Box), by Spanish director Antonio Mercero, debuted in 1972 on Televisión Español to critical acclaim and an International Emmy Award. Co-written by Mercero and José Luis Garci, the film stars José Luis López Vázquez.

Clearly inspired by The Twilight Zone and situated firmly in the horror genre, this take on Francisco Franco’s oppressive regime is one of the darkest political commentaries ever filmed. I do not recommend it for claustrophobes or fascists.
