Five quick recommendations

“Puzzle,” directed by Marc Turtletaub and starring Kelly Macdonald, is one of the nicest, little surprises of the year. (Image copyright Sony Pictures Classics / Big Beach Films)

I’m furiously catching up on 2018 films in preparation for my “year in review” article and voting in the Florida Film Critics Circle, of which I’m a member. Three I’ve seen in the past couple of days that I highly recommend are Puzzle (4 stars on my 0-5 scale), If Beale Street Could Talk (4 stars), which is Barry Jenkins’ follow-up to Moonlight, and Destroyer (3 ¾ stars). Not all of those will end up in my top 10, but they are all worth a view. And don’t miss my review of the truly great Roma (4 ½ stars), out tomorrow in The Orlando Weekly.

Oh, and I still don’t understand the lack of love for The Front Runner (4 stars), an insightful and well-crafted political drama by Jason Reitman.
